Born in Exning on 19th April, 1874 [Newmarket 3b:520], the 3rd son of George and Mary Ann EARITH (née BREE).

1881 census...In Swan Lane, Exning were Lawrence [7], his father George[45] a gasworks labourer, born Exning..his mother Mary A[37], born Hastings... brothers Soloman[14] bricklayer born Newmarket, George [13] errand boy born Newmarket, sisters Emma [9] born Newmarket, Grace [5] born Newmarket and Alice[1] born Exning.

1891 census...at White Horse Square, Exning were Lawrence [16] a shop porter, his widowed mother (charwoman) and sisters Emma E and Alice R. and brother Solomon. His father had died in 1883

1901 census... His mother, brother Solomon [34] and sister Alice were at White Horse Yard, Exning. Sister Grace was a servant in Kensington. No sign of Lawrence

Lawrence was working for the Great Western Railway, at Southall Station, Middlesex from 3rd September 1906 to 8th October, 1910 as a Shedman/Labourer on 3s 4d a day intially rising to 3s 6d in January 1907. No reason is given for his dismissal in Oct 1910. He had given his date of birth as 19th April 1874, if this is accurate it appears there had been no hurry to register his birth as that appears in Q3-1874 in the birth index registers.


1911 census...at Vine Terrace, Cotton End, Exning were Lawrence[36] a bricklayers labourer, his mother, and sister Alice and brother Solomon.

In Q4-1920 Lawrence married Gertrude BROWN in Newmarket.


His death must have been attributable to wounds or illness sustained whilst in the Army. Being transferred to the Labour Corps may indicate he was earlier considered unfit for war service before discharge.He was transferred to Class Z Reserve on 2-4-1919.







Lawrence is buried in Exning Old Cemetery...Ref: C.O.G. 123
